What kind of neckline should i wear

A crewneck or turtleneck will help your shoulders appear wider. You can also wear deeper V-necklines and scoop neck tops, whereas I prefer a wider neckline. Incidentally, a square neckline also helps elongate a short neck and narrow shoulders, but if you have a square-shaped face, you may want to avoid this neckline.

Turtlenecks look best on people with longer faces, thin necks, and narrow shoulders. A smaller chest also helps. Which brings me to 4. Mother nature was quite generous with me in this area, ahem. If you are smaller chested, you have a lot more flexibility with necklines. You can certainly rock a V-neck of scoop neck top, but you are also free to wear crewnecks and turtlenecks.

See 4. If you have a thick or short torso, a more open neckline helps detract from the thickness of your waist and draws the eye upwards towards your face. Yes, even hips play into this. Here are a few rules of thumb to guide you. At the end of the day, figuring out the best necklines for your body may take some trial and error. We all have different combinations of features, so each woman has to figure out what works best for her.

When I saw a picture of myself in this top is when I had my epiphany. I also like to compensate for a higher neckline by wearing a long necklace.

I try to choose ones that I can pull down to show SOME of my neck, but the better alternative is a cowl neck because it creates a vertical line that elongates the body. A mock neck is another good option for those of us with shorter necks. Subscribe to get updates in your email inbox!

In addition to wider necklines, I like button ups because I can adjust the neckline and it adds to my smaller chest area while complimenting my broad shoulders and wide rib cage!

Small, tiny v-necks work. I am small busted and wide, what a great combination: I try to stay away from turtlenecks too, but because of my many chins. Thanks for the information, this is a great post. Totally agree on the importance of the neckline — I look terrible in anything up too close to my neck, collars or turtlenecks. Cowl necks work thankfully…. Such good points thought! Thanks so much for hosting and have a good weekend. This was so interesting and helpful!

A very informative post! Great advice. I think it really does make a difference when we dress correctly for our body types. My two cents: I think a boatneck or modified boat neck is flattering on most people. It is amazing though, how the neckline can make or break a look!

Thanks for hosting Jo-Lynne!! What you posted is quite true, but you can sometimes cheat by adding a topper to the mix!! Great post Jo-Lynne. Now I know why I have always hated turtlenecks. By the way, everything looks better with a really good bra.

One that lifts and in my case minimizes will make or break any top. Thank you so much for the post. Thanks for this… I have many of the same figure issues on the top that you do… broad shoulders, well-endowed, shorter neck. I like a wider neckline too, but then my bra straps always show! I buy mine online at Amazon, but any fabric store should have it. Glory be, like a science. I love ballet or boat neck. Did I make up ballet neck?? I have had two neck surgeries that have left me with battle scars and crepey skin that should be covered up with a turtle neck I can fasten over my chin.

Great tips here. I must love a boat neck because I have many in my closet and they look nice with jewelry too. I like the deep V of a button down shirt with a cami or tank underneath but I am small chested so it seems to work. Double chins are seldom flattered by these: Turtlenecks can make wide shoulders look wider. Finding your personal style is often a journey of trial and error. Knowing the most flattering proportions for your silhouette can save you a lot of time. Details matter so keep your body shape in mind while shopping.

I usually look best in V neck, scoop, or cowl neck tops, but many stores are stuck in the crew neck or boat neck rut think JJill. Often I buy these types of tops because I like the fit, color or fabric.

Your article is a reminder that maybe I should pay more attention to the necklines of the garments I buy. Enjoy your day! I have trouble finding my favorite V necklines at several retailers too. Talbots, for example, make much more crew and boatneck than Vee.

Great tips, Jennifer! They are more flattering at my age. Love this. Now I know why the deep neck Everlane tees are one of my favourites! I can see from this I need to rethink my necklines! I have never thought of necklines all that much, so thanks for sharing this information. Higher v necks will be most flattering for you any maybe more comfortable too.

Keep in mind if you love something, you should wear it! Super article — so helpful. I have a pear body type, small shoulders and bust. I have them in all colors. So easy to throw a scarf on to change the look or wear by themselves. I always felt uncomfortable in them. We need to feel comfortable above all in our clothes I think. Necklines are such a great thing to talk about. Thanks, Jennifer. In my younger days, I was pear-shaped.

Menopause took away my waist — or should I say that all the extra weight I am now carrying is located from bust line to my thighs. But my tummy and rear are big too. Bra is 36DD.

My face is round, which also affects neckline choices. Which of your categories would be best for me? Joan I hear you! I would like to hear about this also. I used to be an hourglass but my middle has thickened and my face has gotten rounder.

So what happens when you are somewhere between two shapes? Unlike what the V-neck does for big boobs, the round neck does wonders for small busts. A high round neckline creates the illusion of a bigger and rounder bust for the opposite reasons mentioned above.

It shows off your shoulders and accentuates the bust. Consider a turtleneck the same as a crew neck. This is a classic neckline that is always in fashion in my opinion.

Much like the V-neck, the scoop is a common neckline that suits bigger busts and is quite sexy and feminine. If you have a great decolletage and lovely skin in this area, a scoop neck is perfect for drawing the eye to your asset. A very deep, low scoop squashes the boobs actually making them look smaller. For big tummies and fuller figures, I would always opt for a V-neck over a scoop when you can.

Because a scoop is round, its more likely to visually create a rounder silhouette whereas a V-neck creates angles which are more slimming. The halter neck cuts away at the shoulders to reveal the shoulders and upper arms and should be avoided at all costs if your upper arms are your trouble spot.

Halter necks however look great on those with narrow shoulders and slim arms, who carry their weight in their lower body. It draws the eye to all your best bits and away from the hips and thighs.
