What do universal rims mean

Numerous factors come into play when deciding what wheels can go on your vehicle. All of the 8-lug rims except for the new Super Dutys are the same bolt pattern. The problem lies in the large hubs Ford used on the rear axles, Chevy rims will not clear them, some Dodge do but not all. Typically, you can swap your rim with the one from another vehicle. However, this depends on several factors such as the size diameter and width , center bore, offset, and bolt pattern on the respective rims.

Overall, both sides should have matching features. Login now! You are using an out of date browser. It may not display this or other websites correctly. Looking for new wheels one is bent and I was searching on Craigslist and found pretty nice looking 17s I know the bolt pattern to look for but he keeps telling me they are just 5 lug universal.

Will they still fit nice or are universal wheels a pain? And even if they are universal, shouldn't they still have a bolt pattern. Sort by date Sort by votes. I've never heard of a "universal" wheel. There are double-drilled, usually with both and or both and , but since there's at least three 5 x patterns and you can't have more than two sets of holes, I don't see how anything could be universal.

Unless they had slots, but that would be insane. Walk away, is my advice. Upvote 0. Silver99OZ Proven Member. Ask the seller of the wheels to take a good picture of the back of the wheels for you. Most wheels have a sticker on the back of the barrel somewhere with all of the specs on the wheels, size, lug pattern, and offset. These specs are also usually cast into the back of the spokes somewhere. Squirrel82 Proven Member. Ask to see if you can test fit. If the guys really trying to make a sale he'll work with you.

Seller said no on testing them, I took a look on the back of the wheels, they Say 17x7 et40 Googled it and the bolt pattern is 5x, now I know for dsms It's 5x, being the difference, will they fit? Or will I encounter issues. If the bolt pattern is 5x it will not fit, and there is not chance that it will ever fit.

Was there more than just 5 lug holes in it for a different bolt pattern or just the 5 for the 5x? As stated, if he won't let you try it than stay away. Sounds like he doesn't know if they will fit but he just wants to sell them to you. The wheel diameter is the height of the wheel across the center; while, the rim width is the measurement from the edge of one bead seat to other bead seat. It is measured in millimeters and depending on where the mounting surface is in relation to the center line; the number can be either positive or negative.

A positive offset is when the mounting surface is in front of the wheel centerline, and a negative offset is when the mounting surface is behind the wheel centerline. This is highly important because you must stick within the recommended offset range for your car.

If the change is too drastic, the wheel may not leave enough room for the wheel hub and brakes to work correctly. The Pitch Circle Diameter PCD is the diameter of the circle which passes through the center of all the studs, wheel bolts or wheel rim holes.
